Your End-of-Summer Bucket List

The time always comes — the hot weather starts to cool, children go back to school, and the salty scent of the beach leaves our clothes and sandals. The end of the summer will be here before we know it, but we’re not ready to throw in the (beach) towel just yet…

We’re looking to make the most out of our last summer months with Jersey outings, great recipes, and awesome DIY projects. Check out our bucket list for the top things to do in NJ before we say goodbye to our beloved summer and welcome the fall weather. Have a great time!

1. With blueberries in season, there’s no better time for a pick-your-own outing with family or friends. If you’ve never walked along the beautiful blueberry fields of New Jersey, you’re in for a real treat. Especially for kids, this incredible experience shows them where their delicious food comes from, and creates a lasting impression about the charm and importance of the earth.

Many options await you, from Terhune Orchards in Princeton, Blueberry Bill Farms in Hammonton, and Styer Orchard in Langhorne, PA. You’ll melt over the sweetness of those ripe blueberries in no time! Try your blueberries plain, on your favorite cereal, on top of pancakes, or in an irresistible pie such as this easy-to-make delight from Pillsbury. Happy picking!

2. Nothing says the end of the summer quite like some heart-jumping theme park thrills. Jersey’s home to top amusement and water parks that are perfect for both parents and their kids. If you and yours are seeking heights, turns, and lots of (fun) screams, check out the wildly popular Six Flags in Jackson, the classic beach park Bowcraft Amusement Park in Scotch Plains, and Funtime America, an indoor amusement park in Eatontown.

Make sure to go on a day that’s not too hot (and switch between rides and games to stay out of the sun a little.) Jersey also has its share of amazing splash-filled adventures, from Asbury Splash Park in Asbury, to Runaway Rapids in Keansburg, to Sahara Sam’s Oasis in West Berlin. Between rides, theme park attractions, games, delicious food, and more, you and your kids will never forget your fun-filled outing.

3. Our list would mean nothing without a mention of the beach! Whether you’re a fan of the upbeat vibe of Wildwood or Ocean City, or the relaxed aura of Long Beach Island and Margate, there’s something special to do on any beach.

This year, instead of packing the usual games and activities, we think you should DIY! Your kids will have so much fun making their own souvenirs — and will remember them for years to come. Collect beautiful beach shells for a mason jar that will look classy on any window sill or table, and remind you all of the beach! Or put shells, sand, and plastic sea creatures into any empty jar (such as a peanut butter jar) to create an “Ocean in a Bottle.” Your kids will love looking at this cool little jar and will remember how much fun they had making it.

Sometimes, the best gifts are ones that are not purchased. The beach is a wonderful place to remind your kids how creative they are and to spark their talent — help them collect shells or driftwood and turn the items into something that they’ll love to hang in their room or give as a sweet gift to someone meaningful in their lives. 4. A night out (without the kids) is always needed from time to time. If you feel like you’ve exhausted the typical dinner-and-a-movie date night, look no further. There are so many things to do and explore in New Jersey that’ll spruce up your average Friday night or weekend in no time!

Crystal Springs Resort in Sussex County is a dreamy weekend getaway that caters to couples and romantic outings. Conveniently located and nestled against a mountainscape, you can enjoy wonderful dining opportunities and endless relaxation, from spa treatments, to a gorgeous biosphere pool, to wine cellar tours. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your alone time together in a beautiful resort that’ll remind you of your unforgettable first dates.

If you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous, NJ has a unique offering that you’re sure to never forget. Ignite that love flame all over again way up in the sky in a hot air balloon! Balloonatics and Aeronuts in Phillipsburg gives you the opportunity to take the ride of a lifetime. Only 50 minutes outside of Trenton, this incredible outing blows every typical date out of the water.

Try the Champagne Balloon Flight, where you’ll soar up high and finish your adventure with a champagne picnic or brunch. Show your special someone that a day or night out together can be spontaneous and exciting — and wildly romantic. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of the Delaware River on a true bucket list experience you’ll never forget.

The summer may be moving fast, but it’s not over yet! We think this is the perfect time to check off the items on your summer bucket list. From outings to recipes to DIY projects, make the most of the warm days and always remember that our beautiful state of New Jersey is filled with wonder and adventure.
