With July 4th right around the corner, I’m already stressing about how much weight I’m about to gain from burgers, hot dogs, and corn on the cob smothered in butter (and secretly, I can’t wait!) But the holidays don’t always have to be as fattening as we anticipate. In this post we’ll provide you with 4 easy and healthy substitutes for your 4th.
1. Kale Chips
Kale is notorious for numerous health benefits such as reduced inflammatory pain and increased cardiovascular strength, not to mention it’s high vitamin and mineral content. Kale chips are as easy as 1-2-3 (literally: 1. wash and toss kale in olive oil 2. bake 3. toss with salt and eat!) and are a great alternative to french fries, going great with burgers or other meat-based entrees.
2. Veggie-Stuffed Burgers
Okay, it’s pretty unavoidable to go meatless on the 4th. But, why not throw a few veggies in your burger? Veggie stuffed burgers are delicious, relatively easy to make, and a huge crowd-pleaser. If you are making burgers from scratch anyway, there’s no reason not to add some veggies. Here’s an easy way to integrate veggies into your burger – finely chop a pepper, carrot, and onion and simply add them to the mix. Trader Joe’s Mirepoix is a good mix to blend into your burger meat if you don’t want to chop everything yourself.
Really, the first tip for eating well dessert-wise is make your own dessert! Or get it from a trusted local bakery. Most of the time the desserts we buy elsewhere are super-processed, have loads of butter, and can be made in a lighter and healthier version.
Another dessert alternative: Try a strawberry shortcake smoothie, like this one.
4. Fruit Skewers
We all know you will be grilling all sorts of stuff – meats, veggies, and more. But are you grilling fruit? If not, why aren’t you? Grilling fruit is both delicious, visually appealing, and healthy. You can really grill any fruit, but here are some deletable ideas:
